Wanna be a Superhero??? Try a Superhero workout.

I love superheroes – Superman, Wonderwoman, Thor (heeeeeey Thor!). Batman and Ironman are ok. Being rich enough to buy your superherodom is not the same as being a legit superhero. Anyway, point is, I love superheroes and I think at some point in our lives, we all wanted to be a superhero. Or maybe you’re like me and you want to be a superhero NOW.

Well, what if I told you there was a way to achieve that? And we have Neila Rey to thank for that.

Thanks to the interwebs, I stumbled across the Batman workout a while ago and was intrigued by it. batman-workoutBut, I never did it. Why? Because I was lazy and didn’t think I could. But every now and again, it would pop back up and I’d bookmark a page or I’d pin it on a board in Pinterest, never to be seen again. Well, that is no more. I have started my journey.

I was looking for different home workouts that I could complete and again came across the Neila Ray name. So, I checked out the site and was overwhelmed with how many workouts were available. Batman, Thor, Wonder Woman, a guide to push ups, and, my ultimate choice – The Hero’s Journey. A 60 day plan. The description of the workout itself is motivating. It’s inspired by the “transformation from minion to master” and “totally transformative..When you have really traveled the hero’s path and have gone through your quest, you will have shed uncertainty, fear and doubt along with excess body weight. You will have forged a new character out of yourself, build strength and endurance and developed power.” I don’t know about you, but I want that in my life.

It’s been a week, and I feel great! My muscles are sore, but in a good . way. I’m losing weight and I’ve got more energy than I’ve had in a very long time. The exercises are all body weight exercises, requiring no equipment or gym, which is good because I’m too broke for the gym and I don’t have the time to fit the gym in. With this workout, I can fit sets in while the kiddo is eating dinner or zoned out Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

I’m on a mission. I’ve got about 45 more pounds to lose and I hope to have it all gone by the end of summer. This workout and the corresponding diet/meal plan are going to help me achieve that. I recommend this to any and everyone who wants to make changes and maybe has limited time and money. This was FREE and super effective. At the end of the 60 days, I know there will be changes and I can’t wait.

Food Scales and Why We Need Them

Weighing your food is a large part of portion control. Do you actually know how much you’re eating? I’m guilty of not always weighing my food. But when I do, I’m always amazed at HOW MUCH food I’m consuming. I might eat a chicken breast and think that I did a good job with my choice, staying within my caloric limit, but then the next day, I weigh a similar chicken breast only to find out that it was 7 or 8 oz instead of the 4 oz I thought I was eating. That’s the difference between 120 calories and 250 calories and that’s a big deal! I have a really bad habit of eating with my eyes rather than eating with my stomach (i.e. My eyes think I can eat an entire Hawaiian pizza. My stomach, on the other hand, knows better).

This is when a food scale comes in handy. I got my hands on a Fraser food scale and instantly loved it. This scale has touch sensitive buttons and pretty awesome accuracy. It’s got different weight options, ranging from 0 ounces to 11 pounds (inFraser food scale grams, ounces, pounds and kilograms). What I really like about it is that I can put a container on the scale, reset the “tare” to 0 and then place my food item in the container and not have to worry about having to do any calculations.

With my old scale, it was an “old school” scale, similar to what you’d use at the grocery store to weigh your produce and it was a pain in the butt because it would always need to be re-calibrated.

Every product has pros and cons and overall this is a pretty darn good scale.

Pros:

– Flat, easy to clean surface made of tempered glass;

– Digital;

– Can be calibrated to subtract the weight of a container added to it;

– Multiple weight options (oz, grams, lbs. etc.);

– Turns off automatically after 1 minute.

Cons:

– It’s a little small which doesn’t work for larger food items that you don’t want to have to cut up to fit in a bowl;

– Sometimes, the buttons don’t respond. I’m not sure if it’s because of the tempered glass or just general sensitivity but it can get annoying.

Overall, this is pretty darn good scale. I’d give it a strong 4/5 stars and highly recommend it to help you keep track of what you’re eating.

Yesterday, I went shopping…well, it was more like window shopping…since all my work pants are waaaaaay too big. I was going to shop online, but since I don’t know what my size is since losing 25 lbs, I had to pop in a store to work that part out.

So, here I am, walking into Torrid (love, love LOVE that store) and I start scoping out the slacks. I grab 3 pairs, in 2 different styles (one pair like cropped leggings and the other just regular cropped slacks) in 3 different sizes – size 1 (the equivalent to a 16), a size 16 and a size 18. Keep in mind, I have some size 16 clothing currently that’s still a little tight but you can never be sure with fit from different stores.

I head into the fitting room, a little reluctantly I might add and try on the dressy leggings. They’re a little snug going on but they’re designed to be that way since they’re slimming and have a “compression” belt. Not bad…But then I tried on the cropped slacks. I started with the 16.

And they fit.

Stretch Marks? Tired Eyes? No problem!

I’ve always had stretch marks. In my early teens, I was a pudgy thing and stretch marks made their way up and down my thighs and hips. Around 16, I lost a ton of weight and my stretch marks pretty much disappeared. But, fast forward to adulthood and you’ll see my weight go up and down repeatedly over the years. And go forward just a smidge more to 2012 and pregnancy. I gained 55 lbs during pregnancy and my stretch marks were at their worst post partum. What else got worst post partum? The bags under my eyes. I NEVER had bags under my eyes before. But when you have a kid who will fight sleep until 11pm and wake up with the sun almost every day, you’ll get bags under your eyes too.

Don’t get me wrong. I love me. And I love what my tiger strips represent. The nine months of pregnancy. The growth and development of this amazing child inside of me. The 19 hours of labor I went through. And the last 18 months of watching this kid grow. But, having these stretch marks makes me a bit self conscious of my body (combined with the massive scar I have running from my belly button to bikini line from a spinal fusion I had in 2010). My stomach is not cute.

I tried cocoa butter but didn’t even see an inkling of a change in my scar and stretch marks. But then I got my hands on Body Merry Stretch Mark cream.

I was skeptical at first but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try it out. So I did. Every day, once a day after my shower. A giant dollop across my stomachs and hips.

Wait…I’m back to pre-pregnancy weight??

Today, my husband was kind enough to advise me that I am currently back down to my pre-pregnancy weight! Whaaat?! Is it wrong that I didn’t even realize???

Progress is slowly being made and I am SO HAPPY! None of my clothes fit and I haven’t found a tailor (yet) to get my clothes altered. It never occurred to me to take a proper “before” picture a the beginning of this journey and because of how I dress, my size has always been well camouflaged and any pictures prior to these 21 pounds lost isn’t a very accurate representation of how much of a change has been made.

What’s changed?

  • I’m no longer a size 20. If I had to guess, I’d say I’m a tight size 16 now.
  • My size 1 tops and pants from Torrid are borderline too big. My XL tops from Target (my closet go to item) are also waaaaaaay too big now.
  • I need to punch a SECOND hole in the belt I bought at the beginning of November.
  • My stomach is pretty darn flat now (save for the baby pouch. I don’t think that’s going anywhere).

This feels great! The baby weight is officially gone! Between 50 and 55 more pounds to go.

It’s almost 2015. Do you know what your resolutions are?

My resolutions are usually the same but my focus improves year after year. The new year is motivation for me to improve upon myself and my life has been steadily moving upwards since 2012. I know that it’s only going to get better.

2015 WILL BE MINE!

Goals for 2015:

1) Achieve AND MAINTAIN my goal weight;

2) Consume a 75% pescatarian diet (this will help with my cholesterol);

3) Blog at least 3 times a week about engaging/interesting topics and gain more followers while retaining the existing ones;

4) Exercise at least 3 times a week;

5) Read more non-fiction in an effort to broaden my mind.

These may sound like generic goals but these are the things that are important to me and things that will make a big difference in my life once I achieve them.

If you haven’t decided on what your resolutions are, I came across a list of resolutions inspired by TED talks and I’ve definitely been inspired by a few of them!
